Tendonitis Surgery

When is it a good idea to consider tendonitis surgery?

When a patient with tendonitis does not respond well to normal treatment methods (ice, medication, anti-inflammatories, etc.) and pain and inflammation persist, surgery for tendonitis may be recommended by one's doctor especially if a preexisting condition is present.

For instance, in the case of the shoulder, a patient with an acromion bone or bone spur rubbing up against a tendon (and therefore causing shoulder tendonitis), would require arthroscopic or minimally invasive surgery to treat the problem. Ice and medication may help temporarily with pain but the problem will not be resolved without surgery. If this condition were allowed to persist for a long time without surgery, a tendon tear may occur. This, of course, would also require surgery and repair to the tendon and/or rotator cuff.

There are numerous factors to help determine when and if a patient should seek surgery for persistent tendonitis:

  • Age of the patient
  • Health of the patient
  • Presence of preexisting conditions (e.g., Achilles tendon rupture, bone spurs, congenital condition)
  • Amount of pain experienced by the patient

Generally, the older the patient, the higher the risk of surgery. This goes for the health of the patient as well. When considering surgery for tendonitis, it is best to consider and weigh these risk factors first with your doctor(s) and family members before making any decisions on whether or not surgery is right for you. Typically, recovery time will also take longer for older patients with declining health.

The presence of any preexisting conditions and/or the amount of pain a patient with tendonitis experiences would fall into the category of motivational factors that one should take into account when deliberating over whether or not to have tendonitis surgery.

Overall, each patient should completely examine and reexamine all of the risk/motivational factors with his or her own doctor(s) and family members before treating chronic tendonitis with surgery.
