Chronic Achilles Tendonitis: Chronic Achilles Tendonitis is common, treatable, and preventable

Chronic achilles tendonitis is a painful condition that involves the large tendon in the back of the ankle. When the tendon and surrounding tissue become inflamed, often as a result of exercise, small tears may also develop in the tendon, causing the potential for rupture.

Prevention

The best treatment of chronic achilles tendonitis is always prevention. Often chronic achilles tendonitis is the result of overuse due to exercise, such as running or jumping sports like volleyball, basketball or gymnastics. In rarer cases, chronic achilles tendonitis can be tied to previous tendon injuries not given the time to heal properly.

Stretching

A great preventative measure to avoid chronic achilles tendonitis is stretching. At the beginning of each day, stretch the tendon by pulling the ball of the foot toward the shin and rotating the foot slowly in a circular motion. The same stretching is helpful before any exercise, especially running.

Shoes

Old or ill-fitting shoes can often lead to chronic achilles tendonitis or tendonitis pain, so be sure your footwear provides proper support. Spending an inordinate amount of money isn't necessary, but getting advice from your podiatrist is.

Tape

Taping the ankles can add support and lessen strain.

Treatment

The best treatment of chronic achilles tendonitis is rest and ice. Use ice every few hours for as long as is comfortable, usually 15 to 20 minutes. Avoid movement and heat, including massage, spas and heat creams. Heat and movement will increase the swelling and pain. Herbal ingredients also may represent one of the most effective treatments for chronic achilles tendonitis.
